FLEX Biodiesel (B100)
FLEX Biodiesel (B100) is a clean-burning fuel composed of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats.  Safe to use in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with no major modifications, the molecules contain about 10% oxygen and it is non-toxic, biodegradable and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics and easy is to use.

It does not contain any hydrocarbon product.

FLEX Biodiesel (B100) is hygroscopic and attracts water.  This property means that the buffer capacity or the capability of binding water is significantly higher than that of diesel fuel.  The occurrence of free water is therefore substantially reduced.  Although it is biologically degradable, biodiesel therefore denies micro-organisms the basis for their development due to this property.  Misgivings of bacterial growth in the biodiesel tank or in fuel bearing vehicle components are therefore unjustified.

FLEX Biodiesel (B100) meets the Australian Fuel Standard (Biodiesel) Determination 2003.

Handling Requirements:
  • Standard storage and handling requirements for petroleum diesel apply to FLEX Biodiesel (B100).
  • Store FLEX Biodiesel (B100) in a clean, dry and dark environment.
  • Storage tanks can be constructed of aluminium, steel, fibreglass, fluorinated polyethylene, fluorinated polypropylene or Teflon®.
  • Store for no longer than 2 months, after which time quality should be closely monitored for water induction and oxidation stability, and the introduction of a storage enhancer additive should be considered.
  • As biodiesel has a solvent effect, when storing FLEX Biodiesel (B100) in a tank previously used to store petroleum diesel, install fuel filters at the tank outlets as the residue accumulated inside the tank by the petroleum diesel may be released by FLEX Diesel (B100).
  • As FLEX Biodiesel (B100) has hygroscopic properties and actually attracts water, the biodiesel manufacturers pay particular attention to ensure low water content.  Storage tanks should be monitored for the induction of water and breathers should be away from sources of moisture.
  • Over prolonged periods of contact with FLEX Biodiesel (B100) some materials can suffer some degradation.  Stainless steel or aluminium should be used in preference to brass, bronze, copper, lead, tin and zinc.
  • Engine or vehicle manufacturers should be contacted to ensure seals, hoses and gaskets are compatible with FLEX Biodiesel (B100) use.
